Pudgie Pies...What are these things?

I have to admit. I had no idea what a pudgie pie was when we first moved to Wisconsin. Someone asked if I wanted a pudgie pie, and I just kind of stared at them, wondering if they were going to bring over a dessert or something. Then, I saw the pie iron tool they were holding and it clicked. I had seen that tool before...just hadn't heard it called a pudgie pie! Turns out pudgie pies go by many names...hobo pies, mountain pies, camping sandwiches. There are probably even more names! It doesn't really matter what you call it. These tasty little items are fantastic and extremely versatile! We'll share the camping equipment you need and camping recipes below!

Basic Equipment Needed

This is pretty straightforward, but you do need to have a few basics. First of all, you (of course), need the pie irons. I would opt for a good, solid set for this. Cast iron is nice and holds up. There are a ton of options out there, but sometimes the cheaper options don't feel very sturdy, or they don't latch easily, or the handles aren't quite long enough. Take time to really look the pie irons over and evaluate them. You want them to last. Sometimes people ask how many they should buy. It really depends on your family size. Cooking times can range from 5-10 minutes, so keep that in mind as you plan. It can be frustrating if some people have finished eating while others are still cooking.

In addition to the pie irons, you really only need bread slices (or tortilla or dough) of your choosing, oil or butter, your fillings!

Classic Recipe Options

Ham & Cheese Pudgie Pie

To create a classic ham and cheese pudgie pie, begin with two slices of your favorite bread—white, whole wheat, or sourdough are great options. Spread a thin layer of butter on the outer sides of each slice to achieve a golden, crispy crust. On the inner side, layer slices of ham and your choice of cheese, such as cheddar, Swiss, or pepperjack. Close the sandwich and place it in a preheated pudgie pie iron. Latch it and place it over the campfire. Cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden and the cheese is melted.

Toasted PB&J

This one is always a tried and true option for the kids. Really, you can't go wrong with a PB&J. Butter the outsides of the bread slides and then make the peanut butter and jelly sandwich like normal. Place the finished sandwich in the pie iron and toast it. A few minutes per side is really all the time that is needed. Then, serve and...happy kiddos!

Pizza Pudgie Pie

Here is another delicious classic. Again, begin with two slices of your favorite bread. Spread a layer of butter on the outer sides of each slice. Then, place one of the slices into the preheated pie iron (this makes assembly easier for this pudgie pie). Spread a layer of pizza sauce on the slice that is in the pie iron. Add some mozzarella cheese. Then, top with your favorite pizza toppings. Put the second slice on top and secure the pie iron. Place it over the campfire and cook. A few minutes per side should give you a toasted golden sandwich with ooey, delicious pizza fillings!

Here are a few options:

A Few Elevated Options

The Reuben Pudgie Pie

This one is such a favorite of ours! It hardly feels like camp food when you are enjoying this meal! Start with two pieces of rye bread. Butter the outside of each slice. Place one of the slices in the pie iron (for easier assembly). Then, add a few slices of corned beef on that slice. Put some sauerkraut on top of the corned beef. Add a drizzle of Thousand Island dressing, and top with a slice of swiss cheese. Secure the pie iron and place it over the campfire. Cook for 4-5 minutes per side, or until your slices are golden the the filling is hot. Enjoy!

BBQ Chicken Pudgie Pie

Next, the BBQ chicken pudgie pie offers a hearty and tasty option. Using a sturdy bread, such as sourdough, will help to hold this sandwich together. Butter your slices or oil your pie iron. Put one slice into the pie iron. On that slice, spread a layer of tangy BBQ sauce, add shredded cooked chicken, thinly sliced red onions, and a handful of shredded mozzarella cheese. Add the second slice and secure the pie iron. Place over the campfire and cook for 4-5 minutes per side or until the slices are golden. This combination creates a rich, smoky flavor that pairs beautifully with a campfire.

The Quesadilla Pudgie Pie

This one is fun and offers a lot of versatility. You can start with small tortillas (flour or corn), or honestly, you can make this with bread as well. If you opt for the tortillas, just be sure to cut them so they fit nicely into the pie iron. Start by oiling your pie iron or buttering your bread slices. Add some shredded cheese. Then, top with seasoned, pre-cooked ground beef or turkey. Add your toppings onto this...tomato, sliced olives, and diced peppers are great choices. Top with another sprinkle of cheese. Then, place the second slice (or second tortilla) on top. Secure the pie iron and place it into the fire. Cook for 4-5 minutes per side or until golden and melty. Delicious!

Got a Sweet Tooth?

Pudgie pies are not just meal options. They are excellent dessert options as well! Talk about a versatile tool!

The Fruit Pie Pocket

For those with a sweet tooth, you can make a delicious pie treat to enjoy after dinner. Start by buttering two slices of bread. Place one into the pie iron. Top with your choice of pie filling. Apple, cherry, or blueberry is a delicious choice. Now...you can can just stop there. But, if you want to add a bit of "extra" to your dessert...you can put a little cream cheese in with the pie filling. Then, top with the second bread slice and toast your pie for a few minutes per side. After it is warmed, take it out of the pie iron and sprinkle a little cinnamon sugar on top. Yum!

The S'mores Pudgie Pie

One of the most beloved dessert pudgie pies is the classic chocolate and marshmallow s'mores pudgie pie. To make this, place graham crackers, a generous portion of chocolate, and marshmallows between two slices of buttered bread. Cook it over the campfire until the bread is golden brown and the filling is gooey and melted. For a twist, try adding a spoonful of Nutella to the mix for an extra layer of indulgence.

PB & Banana Pudgie Pie

For peanut butter lovers, the peanut butter and banana pudgie pie is a must-try. Spread peanut butter on the buttered bread slices and layer with banana slices. Grill until the bread is toasted and the peanut butter is warm and melty. To elevate this dessert, sprinkle some chocolate chips or a drizzle of honey before sealing the pudgie pie iron.

These options are really just the beginning of your pudgie pie adventuring! There are so many meal and dessert options that you can create. Get adventurous and try it out!
