You get to use the leftover bones and skin for a purpose, and you end up with delicious and healthy broth that you can store and have ready for whenever you need it. Bone broth has some incredible health benefits! It is high in minerals, and it supports healthy digestion and immune function. It also supports skin elasticity and join heath! Trust me, you will be happy you gave it a try!
I honestly don't remember how I got started with this. It wasn't something that my family did when I was growing up. I first started making my own broth after my husband got into smoking meats (but the meat does not need to be smoked in order to make broth). I suppose it was a combination of things: I had friends who were talking about the health benefits of bone broth, I knew that my mom's spaghetti sauce recipe included using a neck bone that simmered for awhile, I noticed that we were just tossing out the bones and skin after my husband smoked a whole bird. I figured there must be a use for those bones, and I dug in to learn more about it. I am glad I did, and I am happy to pass this info along to you!
So, what do you do to make your own broth? I will share a few tips and the steps below.

Tips:
Do not stress about having the perfect ingredients. This process is so forgiving, and it can be adapted to fit what you have on hand or to fit your particular tastes. I will share my typical ingredients used, but feel free to adapt and change it to fit YOUR needs.
I freeze my broth. If you plan to can your broth, you MUST use a pressure canner, not a boiling water canner. The broth is not acidic enough for canning with a boiling water canner.
Have quart freezer bags and a cookie sheet on hand. I like to freeze my broth in 2 cup increments in quart freezer bags. The ones with the stay open/stand up bottom design work well. I add the broth to the bags and then lay them flat on the cookie sheet. I place the entire sheet into my freezer and allow the bags to freeze. Then, I remove the frozen bags and stack them in my freezer. Allowing them to freeze on the cookie sheet gives you a nice, flat, stackable bag that makes storage easy!
Prepare the broth immediately after your meal. Make it a part of your cleanup process. The broth can simmer in the slow cooker overnight! You can literally set it up in the slow cooker and forget about it until the next morning!
Don't be afraid to give this a try! Bone broth has incredible health benefits. Its high mineral content can support your digestion and immune function. It can also support skin elasticity and joint health.
Quality bone broth can gel when cooled. Don't freak out if this happens! It is a sign of a good bone broth. The connective tissues and bones of the turkey or chicken contain collagen. This breaks down during cooking and can gel upon cooling. The broth will liquefy when you cook with it!
And, that's it! Easy peasy! You get to use the leftover bones for a purpose, you get to use up veggies that you have on hand and that may need to be used up anyway, and you let it simmer overnight while you sleep.
